Biomedical Engineering is a multi-disciplinary field in which the principles of engineering are applied to solving problems in medicine and life sciences. The department aims at bringing about an overall enhancement in healthcare. The Biomedical Engineering Programme aims to develop, in the student, a strong capacity to understand and design diagnostic & monitoring equipments, life-supporting devices, rehabilitation-equipment and software to support analysis of/ diagnosis from physiological & clinical data, as well as healthcare-management, by incorporating knowledge from both the engineering and medical domains.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering was established in the year 1992. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, accredited by the NBA, AICTE, for 5 years and 3 years, respectively. It also supports research programmes. While the students at the department are trained to be engineers with a strong mathematical background, they have the privilege of learning many clinical subjects through members of the faculty from various departments of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. The physical proximity of the medical college to MIT provides a very favourable environment for students in Biomedical Engineering, both at post-graduate and undergraduate level.
The department provides a variety of modern facilities to help the students acquire an in-depth technical knowledge in the field. Currently, it has two laboratories, one involving computing and the other dedicated to biomedical instrumentation. In addition, a Research Laboratory is being planned.
Department’s Objectives
-
Excellence in teaching, and disseminating knowledge in engineering related to basic biomedical sciences and health care applications
-
Excellence in Research: Thrust areas include Medical Imaging and Image Processing, Medical Informatics and Data mining, Biomedical Signal Processing, and Biomedical Instrumentation
-
Preparation of students for careers in biomedical engineering characterised by leadership and communication skills and a commitment to lifelong learning

-
Engineering Domain: Engineering Mathematics, Electronic Instrumentation, Microcontrollers, Biomedical Equipments, Telemetry, Bio-fluids & Bio-mechanics, and Computational techniques such as Digital Signal Processing, Image Processing and Medical Imaging, and Data mining
-
Physiology/ Medical Domain: Basic Clinical Sciences (Cardiology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics & Radiology), Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry. The students have the privilege of learning these subjects through members of the Faculty from various departments at the KMC, Manipal
Faculty
The department is served by twelve faculty members. Three have earned their PhD degrees and have rich experience from reputed universities in India and abroad. Two members are pursuing their PhD (one currently in the UK). The faculty and staff at the department strive to provide the highest quality education and research opportunities. The department is further enriched by many adjunct faculty-members from reputed organisations. Both teaching and non-teaching (technical) members of the staff supervise each laboratory. They all are well qualified and have been trained in modern technical skills.
