Laboratories:
The department provides a variety of modern facilities to help the students acquire an in-depth technical knowledge in the field. Currently, there are two labs, the Biomedical Instrumentation Laboratory, and the Biomedical Computing Laboratory. A third lab i.e., one on Microprocessors and Microcontrollers, has also been added. In addition, the Department plans the setting up of a Post Graduate Research Laboratory.

Biomedical Instrumentation Laboratory:

This laboratory consists of several equipments including the physiograph, defibrillator, incubator, ECG recording system, phonocardiograph and Sensor & Transducer kits.

ComputingLaboratory:

This laboratory consists predominantly of an array of computers to assist the development of software for physiological signal processing, medical imaging and image processing, and several other healthcare applications, such as medical informatics and data mining. Biomedical Computing lab introduces students to computer-programming on several platforms, including Biomedical Signal and Image Processing experiments.

Microprocessors and Microcontroller laboratory:

This laboratory consists of IBM PCs for Intel 8086 microprocessor assembly language programming, Intel 8051 microcontroller kits and interfacing kits such as HEX Keyboard, ADC, DUAL DAC Interface, LCD interface, and Stepper motor interface for microprocessor/microcontroller. Microprocessor/Microcontroller assembly language programming and experiments are carried out at simulation level using assemblers and at hardware levels using programming kits.

Research Laboratory:

Biomedical Engineering is inherently inter-disciplinary, with a lot of research potential. The presence of Kasturba Medical College (KMC), a teaching hospital under the umbrella of Manipal University, has created a very favourable environment for pursuing research at the Dept. of Biomedical Engineering, often in collaboration with the doctors at KMC, and at other sister-institutions such as the Manipal Life Sciences Centre (MLSC) and the Manipal College of Allied Health Sciences Centre (MCOAHS). A new Research lab has therefore been constructed at the Dept. of Biomedical Engineering, for providing dedicated infrastructure towards strengthening research activities at the Dept. Currently, the lab is equipped with the PowerLab, a 3-channel physiological signal acquisition system, LabVIEW (through Campus-License) and several computers to facilitate research activities. Many of the projects that have been listed in the project-section are currently ongoing at this Laboratory. MATLAB is currently accessible to students of the Dept. at the Central Computing Facility. The department is planning to expand the infrastructure to support more research activities in the near future.
