Practice School is an integral part of Manipal Institute of Technology’s curriculum since 2005. The concept was first introduced by MIT School of Chemical Engineering, USA in 1917. Using this concept, the institute imparts training to its students so that they effectively link the theory learnt in classrooms with the practice in the industry. Students undergo training in the on-going developmental activities of a professional organisation, under the direct supervision of the institute faculty and experts from the industry. This helps an industry to cut down training costs as the students are expected to be placed in the company which conducts their Practice School. The Practice School in under graduate programmes are optional in the VIII Semester (except Architecture-VII Semester), with a minimum period of 16 weeks. In the postgraduate courses, a one-year internship is to be undertaken during the III semester of the programme. An exhaustive process of continuous internal evaluation takes place at the workplace, with our faculty members monitoring the progress in close coordination with the industry expert.

A good numbers of students opt for Practice School. The remainder do their project work at the institute primarily to gain knowledge to pursue higher studies abroad or owing to the enthusiasm for the projects offered by the departments. The projects are conducted in large industrial complexes, national laboratories, R & D institutions, banks & publishing houses, financial institutions, software organisations and health care organisations. Student preference for companies is based on company rating, nature of projects offered, prospects of absorption, accommodation, stipend offered. Companies conduct campus visits for selection of under graduate and postgraduate students for internships.

Some of the major core industrial houses that have participated in the institute’s unique exercise are ABB, OSRAM, Tata Steel, Ashok Leyland, Bharatia Cutler Hammer, Tata Motors, L&T, ACC, Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Co., Mahindra & Mahindra, Wipro Power Systems, etc. In the service sector, major companies like Free Scale Semiconductors, Hewlett-Packard, EMC, Juniper Networks, ST Micro Electronics, CISCO, Microsoft etc. have been participating in our training venture. Amongst the public sector units, BHEL, HPCL, Indraprastha Power generation, IOCL and BPCL are offering training facilities to our students. The percentage of students during the current year (50.06%) and the previous year (48%) opting for Practice School shows the popularity amongst students.
