The undergraduate programme, which started in 1968, consists of a didactic and a clinical component wherein the student acquires adequate knowledge of anatomy of the periodontium and preventive and treatment aspects of periodontal disease. The students are trained with basic skills to render non surgical and preventive periodontal procedures. Introduction to surgical periodontal procedures is facilitated by observing and assisting as procedures are being performed. All these are done under faculty supervision. Rural community camps provide students with an opportunity to be a part of public health programmes and thereby creating awareness on oral health issues. At the end of the training period, students should be competent enough to diagnose periodontal problems, plan and perform the basic as well as emergency periodontal procedures.
