The department was established in 1983 with the aim of imparting comprehensive training to undergraduate students so that they acquire knowledge and skills to enable them to effectively deal with the problems encountered in a child. This course consists of a didactic, practical and clinical component for which the latest equipment and materials are available, along with qualified and efficient staff to supervise. The training is designed to provide the students with the broadest possible exposure to paediatric dentistry including outpatient management, school dental health programmes, counselling of parents and children and chair side general anesthesia for medically compromised patients.
The undergraduate training in Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry begins from second year BDS onwards, wherein extensive preclinical training is delivered in a state of the art modernised dental lab with separate work stations, completely equipped with phantom heads for each student to develop skills of paediatric operative dentistry before they face a clinical situation.
During their clinical training in third and final year, they are given exposure to a variety of clinical material in the department and are made to actively participate in the school health programmes, which involve treatment of children from schools in rural areas. Comprehensive dental care of these children is taken care of. There are presently 7 schools enrolled for the school health programme.
The undergraduates are trained to diagnose a case and handle disabled children with tender loving care.
