Oral and maxillofacial surgery is an internationally recognised specialty which deals with the correction of a wide spectrum of diseases, injuries, and defects in the head, face, jaws and hard and soft tissues of the mouth.

The department found its roots at the time of the inception of the college in 1965 when the first batch of BDS students registered. The department has seen a constant and gradual rise in its activities and achievements. Under the guidance of various heads of the department, it was recognised as a centre for postgraduate (MDS) studies in 1982. Since then, the department has featured numerous oral and maxillofacial surgeons, who have risen in status and have become luminaries in our field.

Our department has been a recognised centre for the training of MFDS degree conferred by the Royal College of Glasgow.

The treatments that are performed in this department may range from any of the following listed procedures:

  • Dentoalveolar surgery i.e. surgery to remove impacted third molars and other teeth, difficult tooth extractions, extractions on medically compromised patients, bone grafting or preprosthetic surgery to provide better anatomy for the placement of implants, dentures or other dental prosthesis
  • Diagnosis and treatment of benign pathologies like cysts and tumors etc
  • Diagnosis and treatment of malignant pathologies like cancer of the mouth and jaws
  • Diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous malignancy of lip and other neighboring areas
  • Diagnosis and treatment of chronic facial pain disorders
  • Diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders(TMJ)
  • Diagnosis and treatment of incorrect bites and other jaw/ facial deformities
  • Diagnosis and treatment of soft and hard tissue trauma of the oral and maxillofacial region like jaw bones, cheek bones, nasal bones, Lefort fractures, skull and orbital fractures
  • Diagnosis and treatment of diseases and other pathologies affecting the major and minor salivary glands
  • Splint and surgical treatment of sleep apnea in conjunction with other specialties
  • Surgeries for insertion of oral and maxillofacial implants
  • Various cosmetic surgeries
  • Minor surgical procedures under office based sedation techniques for very anxious patients
