The department of Oral pathology was established in the year 1965. It is a specialty of dentistry which includes dental anatomy, histology, embryology & pathology. Clinical dentistry is largely based on the foundation of study of Dental anatomy and histology.

The practice of oral pathology includes research, diagnosis of diseases using clinical, radiographic, microscopic, biochemical or other examinations. It occupies a unique position in the health care community for the dental as well as medical professions. A thorough knowledge obtained from this subject will help to correlate human biology with signs and symptoms of human disease. This will help to understand oral disease so that it can be properly diagnosed and adequately treated.

The undergraduate students are trained to acquire the skills in:

  • Identification and carving of permanent teeth
  • The age estimation using plaster casts of different age groups
  • Microscopic identifications of oral tissues as well as common oral lesions
  • Study of teeth anomalies through specimens and plaster casts

The post-graduation course started in the year 1983 with the intake of 2 students per year. The post-graduate students attain higher competence in dealing with the nature of oral diseases, their causes and effects. They perform routine histopathological evaluations of specimens and also carry out routine diagnostic procedures including cytological, micriobiological, other investigations and research projects.
