One of the first of its kind, YELL (Youth for Expression diaLogue and Literature) provides the students of MIC, a platform for expressing themselves in their own unique ways. The club is a combination of a debating club and a media club.
Born in September 2006, YELL has successfully organised more than 20 events till date. The events included heated debates on national issues of social and economic importance, movie screenings and discussions, and other literary activities. The club conducts workshops, both at the institutional and University level. YELL also conducts the yearly Intra College literary fests in MIC. The club whose membership is growing by the day, has also joined hands with social organizations and NGOs to have a social service outlook.
In the coming years, YELL plans to build a nation-wide network of media professionals and students and also host national level events for media students from all over the country.
YELL Annual Report – 2008-09:
-
Exp'load – Keeping with the experience of the year before, YELL began its activities for the academic year 2008-09 with Exp'load (Expression Overload), an event only for the freshers (BA and MS 1st yr). 4 events were held over 3 days which included Creative Writing, Debate, Pot Pourri and Extempore. The participation from the freshers was very refreshing with up to 60 people taking part in a single event (Creative Writing). In all 80 individual people from both the freshmen batches took part in the event.
-
Yell Week – Yell Week was the biggest event of the year for the club. It was a week-long literary event with 10 events in total which were JAM (Just a minute), Debate, Mock Press, Creative Writing, Poetry Writing in English and Hindi, Verbal Overdose (a mix of three Extempore events), Blog Contest, Lexicon (Word Puzzles) and Pot Pourri. The event, like the year before, was also the selection process for contestants for Utsav. YELL takes pride in the achievement of Nitya Balakrishnan, then BAJC IIIrd Yr, who went on to win the Utsav JAM, which is always a very fiercely contested event.
-
Shoutouts – Over the year we held 4 shout-outs which ranged from discussions on Obama's appointment as President of USA to the ever rising cases of female infanticide and even about the then broiling embargo that was the Ram Sena led attacks on pubs and pub culture in Mangalore and other neighbouring areas. As ever, all our shout-outs this year were thought provoking, intensely debated upon and witnessed large participation.
-
Speaker's Club – Speaker's Club was a new concept that we introduced this year and provided a platform for the students of MIC and the members of the club to come out and speak in front of audiences and help remove any stage fear they might have had. We held 3 speaker's club sessions through the year and by its very nature is a concept that YELL as a club is very dedicated to.
-
Workshops – We held three major workshops during the year. Two, on handwriting analysis were conducted by Kartavya, a current 4th year student at MIT and a recognised professional in the field of psychological analysis. The 3rd workshop of the year was on Interviews and how to face an interview and be prepared for one. All three workshops saw large participation from members and non-members alike.
-
Quiz – We also contested one general quiz which saw around 30 people participating and was generally well received. This was the first ever quiz that the club had conducted.
-
JAMs – Other than the one during YELL week, we also conducted two JAMs, which while witnessing lesser participation than other events (mostly due to the nature of the event), was still right up there in the entertainment factor for both the participants and the audience alike.
