A post-graduate gold-medalist in Journalism and Mass Communication from Karnatak University, Dharwad, Varadesh Hiregange, has spent about 10 years as journalist in Deccan Herald at Bangalore and Mangalore after his brief stint with The Times of India in Bangalore. During his tenure as a journalist, he has published nearly 200 articles on variety of topics including literature, art, culture, politics, environment and development. He has presented several papers in national and international conferences. He has a poetry collection to his credit published from Akshara Prakashana, Heggodu. He also holds post-graduate degrees in English and Ancient Indian History.
He started teaching at Manipal Institute of Communication in 2002 and became its director in 2009. He has taught subjects such as Communication Theory and Research, Reporting, Editing, Media Laws and Ethics, Investigative Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, Environment and Development Communication, Creative Communication, Global Communication, Film Theory and Criticism , Media Criticism etc. He has also worked as visiting professor in Hochschule University, Bremen, Germany.
