Evaluation and treatment of patients with painful and traumatic conditions of the spine and extremities treated conservatively and operatively. This in-patient unit works in close collaboration with the Dept of Orthopaedics, KMC, Mangalore and areas of training here are Rheumatology, Emergency Medicine, Trauma care, Musculoskeletal physiotherapy, and Rehabilitation.
OPD Unit In-Charge: Mr. RS. Rajasheker, Assistant professor.
Evaluation and treatment of patients with soft tissue injuries and painful conditions are done with physiotherapy treatment methods like electrotherapy, exercise therapy, manual therapy, taping and patient education. Out-patients are treated on a day-to-day basis on appointments here. The Physiotherapy OPD starts at 9 am till 1 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm on all days (except Sundays and government holidays).
Oncology & Medicine Unit In-Charge: Mr. Vijaya Kumar, Assistant professor; Faculty- Ms. Elvita Kunder, Assistant lecturer.
This unit takes of patients with general medical conditions like acute hemorrhagic stroke, oncological conditions, post-radiation therapy, post-chemotherapy and cancer pain syndromes. Exercise prescription for in-patients with diabetes, obesity, and other metabolic conditions like hypothyroidism, nutritional deficiencies in children etc. also an adequate clinical exposure to neurological conditions like peripheral neuropathies and orthopaedic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and so on.
Surgery & ICU unit, Unit In-charge- Ms. Vaishali, Associate professor; Faculty- Mr. A. Gopal, Assistant professor
This unit covers General Surgery, Neonatology, OBG, Medicine, and Orthopaedics patients for their emergency care and vital functions. This unit gives intensive care and chest physiotherapy to critically ill patients and emphasizes on bronchial hygiene, lung expansion, mechanical ventilation, limb physiotherapy and functional rehabilitation. Common types of patients seen are abdominal surgery, and amputations. Standardized evaluation forms are used here. Students also get trained in emergency procedures, ICU monitoring, oxygen therapy, nebulization, humidification, infection control, sterile procedures and manual chest physiotherapy techniques. Use of devices like flutter, Positive Expiratory Pressure, Acapella, and Inspiratory Muscle Trainer are used to improve chest function in these patients.

A daily visit to chetana (special school) is also done to treat developmentally challenged children. General medical conditions are treated under the unit of Medicine. Neurorehabilitation, Unit In-Charge: Mr. Abraham M Joshua, Associate professor & HOD
This unit provides hands-on, in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation for central and peripheral nervous system disorders and neuromuscular disorders. Patients with functional problems after spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, stroke, peripheral neuropathies, are given exercises on physioball and therapeutic mat, gait and balance training and functional training. This unit works in close collaboration with Dept of Neurology and Dept of Neurosurgery, KMC Mangalore. Use of hydraulic tilt table for orthostatic hypotension, functional electrodiagnosis for evaluation and biofeedback during treatment is done on a routine basis. Upper extremity task related training is done using pegboard and Box and Blocks technique and Hand strengthening unit. Oromotor neurorehabilitation clinic incorporates proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques for the patients with swallowing disorders. Patient prognosis and outcome evaluation is done through standardized functional outcome scales to facilitate ongoing clinical research and development of new treatment techniques.

NeuroSensory Developmental Clinic, KMC, Bejai, Mangalore.
The largest pediatric neurologic physiotherapy unit in south India, with extensive sensory integration and neurodevelopmental therapy equipments on par with requirements of Neuro Developmental Therapy Association, USA. The sensory integration unit comprises of visual stimulation clinic, vestibular rehabilitation clinic and somatosensory training clinic. Internationally accepted evaluation scales are used on a routine basis to screen, diagnose, plan and determine prognosis in developmentally challenged children. Parents are encouraged and motivated to handle their children therapeutically thus treatments would have a carry-over effect at home. Collaboration with orthotic and prosthetic centers around, and also special schools and other rehabilitation centers, this unit is the central focus of radiation of pediatric rehabilitation in the south zone.
Women’s & Child Health Physiotherapy Unit, Dept of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Govt. Lady Goschen Hospital, Mangalore
The hospital is 330 bedded. This government hospital provides pre, post and antenatal care for OBG patients and has a well equipped neonatal care centre for early interventions. Standardized patient evaluations are performed and the department is also equipped with pelvic floor unit for training patients with incontinence.
