The department was established in 1989 with its clinical services in Center for Basic Sciences, Bejai campus. The undergraduate degree program for Bachelor of Physical Therapy (BPT) was started in the year 1995 and subsequently 12 batches of students have successfully passed out of this institution. The postgraduate degree program in Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) began from the year 2003 and 7 batches have passed out since then.
The department of physiotherapy at KMC, Mangalore now has all the facilities of academic, clinical and research for undergraduate (BPT), postgraduate (MPT) and doctorate (PhD) studies in physiotherapy as per the requirements of the recognizing professional body, The Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP, New Delhi). Both the BPT and MPT courses are approved by the Foreign Credentialing Commission on Physical Therapy (FCCPT), Accreditation Council for Canadian Physiotherapy Academic Programs (ACCPAP), Health Professions Council (UK) and Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP). The credentials of the courses provided by the department are well on par with many international Universities and accreditation boards in USA, UK, Australia, Middle East and Canada.
The department boasts of globally represented and well-settled alumni, who have pursued higher studies and work abroad.

The Bachelor of Physical Therapy (BPT) degree programme has a duration of 4 ½ years (4 years of academics and 6 months of compulsory rotatory clinical internship).
The Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) programme has duration of two-years and is conducted in following specialties.
